What is Wellness?

The World Health Organisation defined Health and Well being as a state of complete physical, mental and social wellbeing – and not merely the absence of disease or infirmity. (World Health Organisation, 1946).

SAMHSA has identified 8 dimensions of Wellness that are important to optimise health and well being.

According to the Australian Government, on average, office workers sit for 76 per cent of the day and that there is considerable amount of evidence that suggests that prolonged sitting increases the risk of cancer, cardiovascular disease and death. Even short regular breaks from sitting is beneficial to your health.


Suggestions to help you become more physically healthy at work:

For Employees:

·        Get off the bus one stop earlier and walk the rest of the way

·        Go and talk to your colleagues instead of calling or sending an email

·        Track your steps with a pedometer – aim for at least 10,000 steps a day.

·        Stand up whilst on the phone

·        Join a gym near your work, and work out before or after work while you avoid rush hour


For Employers:

·        Arrange bike racks and promote cycling instead.

·        Start a competition on healthy lifestyle in your office

·        Get the office to train for an event, such as Run for a Reason. This is great for physical health and doing something for charity.

·        Start a walking group with work colleagues during your lunch break

·        Provide stand up desks for employees.

·        Offer gym memberships

Stressful work environments, long work hours and low morale contribute to absenteeism and sick leave and can have a

negative effect on our social and emotional wellbeing. Recognising and promoting social and emotional wellbeing within

the workplace has a positive impact on everyone within the company.


Suggestions to help you become more socially and emotionally healthy at work:

For Employees:

·        Invite your colleagues to participate in local recreation and community clubs and activities such as book clubs, walking groups, art groups or yoga classes, with you.

·        Better yet, start your own activities group at your workplace

·        Start a socials committee


For Employers:

·        Organise social functions within the workplace for employees and their families, to help build social network and a sense of community.

·        Establish an Employee Assistance Program to provide employees with access to confidential counselling services.

·        Create a socials committee

Suggestions to help you become more intellectually healthy at work:


·        Approach your boss and ask whether your workplace will support you with upskilling or professional development. They may pay entirely or partially for the course you wish to take

·        See whether you can learn different positions

·        Ask if you would be able to have a mentorship to learn from someone who is in a position which you are aiming for

·        Attend seminars to keep up to date with the latest practices



·        Offer training programs to your staff

·        Offer mentorships

·        Have a calendar of seminars that are coming up that staff can attend

Suggestions to help you become more spiritually healthy at work:


·        Complementing each other’s work

·        Showing appreciation to others, tell them both verbally and via email / letter



·        Have a clear company mission and purpose. Everyone wants to feel what they are doing at work actually matters.

·        Deliver praise and recognition

Suggestions to help you become more environmentally healthy at work:


·        Say hi to all your colleagues

·        Have a zero tolerance for workplace bullying

·        Start the conversation around mental health

·        Have meaningful conversations with your colleagues

·        Say thank you, it goes along way



·        Monitor workload and work hours. Too many hours and high workload can lead to burnout.

·        Deliver praise and recognition

·        Allow workplace flexibility.

·        Refrain from micromanagement.

·        Get out of the office occasionally. Have a scavenger hunt, team building exercises or treat your employees to a fun afternoon

·        Turn mundane tasks into a game, every so often, not only will it be fun but also more productive.

·        Have good coffee. Don’t underestimate the power of a good cup of coffee to happiness levels.

·        Say thank you, it goes along way.

It’s not about how much you make that makes you financially well, but rather are you satisfied with how much you make?

Someone who makes $30,000 a year could be more financially well then someone who makes $100,000 per annum.


Suggestions to help you become more financially healthy at work:


·        Have savings goals – get your workplace to pay you into different accounts. One as a savings account which you don’t touch and your normal bank account which you use daily.

·        Plan a budget, set goals, plan a saving’s strategy, and plan for retirement.

·        Contribute to your superfund



·        Provide bonuses for good work

·        Hold a seminar on how to plan for retirement etc.

4.    Develop a SMART goal to help improve the chosen aspect.

  • Specific – what, where, when, why
  • Measurable – frequency, amount, etc. that you can measure
  • Attainable – do you have the means to accomplish this goal?
  • Realistic – is this doable?
  • Time-bounded – have a deadline or time-frame to accomplish this goal
