Relief Teachers
Arrival
Most schools need you to arrive about 20 minutes before school starts. Please report to the administration area and ask for the contact ChoiceOne has given you. You will need to ask for the duty plan, roster and behaviour management plan of the school. You will also need to provide the registrar with your Education ID number and / or WACOT number.
If you are being placed in an Independent or Catholic school, please remember to check whether you are being paid by the school or ChoiceOne.
If you are being paid by the school, please give your banking details, superannuation fund details and tax file number to the school administrator and ask when the next pay date is.
If ChoiceOne is paying you, please remember to return the enclosed forms and to sign our timesheet and return it to ChoiceOne as soon as possible.
Duty
Playground duty may be required if your teacher was rostered. Check the roster, which can usually be found in staff or class rooms. If there is a discipline problem in the class please check school policy with another teacher before administering any action. Be sure not to leave any child unsupervised in the classroom. Never touch a child.
Planning
During the breaks organise and prepare files for years 1 – 7 e.g. worksheets, teaching ideas etc. If free reign is given to construct the day in your own way, always act upon it. This is a good opportunity for you to develop your own style and shows confidence in your own ability.
Etiquette
Be aware of school etiquette such as using other staff members’ crockery, taking the principal’s or allocated parking spots, leaving grounds unannounced for lunch, using the office phone for personal calls and general respect of staff, children and property. Be prepared to make the first move, where appropriate and introduce yourself staff you have not previously met.
Marking
To comply with professional standards all marking must be completed and left for the class teacher. Any child absentees, notices, school announcements or parent messages are to be noted for the returning teacher. In addition, please leave a brief summary for the returning teacher of the work you have covered and any additional comments.
End of the day
At completion of each teaching day lock windows and check if it is cleaning day, as chairs may need to be put up onto desks. Most schools require relief staff to remain for 20 minutes after the end of class. However this may differ from school to school.
Good luck and we hope you enjoy working with ChoiceOne!
